Another exciting development this year has been in joining the
Leicester Illustrators Group. The group was started late last year and our last six months of meetings have culminated in our first exhibition taking place at the minute. We've all created pieces on the theme of ghosts and you can visit it until the end of April at
The Crumblin' Cookie on High Street Leicester.
My fellow illustrators are;
Richard Scott
Ryan Button
Michelle Last
Rachael Smith
Drew Askew
Verity Simpson
Louise Deri
Rachael's blog features some photo's from our opening night.
My submitted piece is a screenprinted illustration of the Myling ghost story.
In Scandanavian
folklore, Myling, are the unresting spirits of children. Born out of wedlock or
to a family that couldn’t provide for them, they were led out into the
wilderness and abandoned there.
The belief is that
these unwanted children, haunt the woods where they met their cruel end and
seek revenge on lone wanderers by leaping on their back and demanding they are
carried to a graveyard so they may rest in hallowed ground. However the Mylings
grow heavier as they reach the destination and if the carrier can’t make the
journey the Mylings murder their victims in rage and drag them to hell.
Inspired by the
parallels between this story, the English folk song ‘The Cruel Mother’ and also
the German fairytale Hansel and Gretel I drew my influences from folk art
and fairytale book illustration.
If anyone is interested in buying a print please email me for details. They were created in a very limited run of seven and I have two left.
